120 Gallon Reef Tank: Setup, Gear List & Cost

The 120 (48 × 24 × 24″) is where a reef becomes an aquascape. Two full feet front-to-back means islands, canyons, and swim-throughs instead of a rock wall — and two feet of height means your lighting choice finally has consequences. What the second foot of depth buys

Every smaller standard tank is a corridor — 12, 13, or 18 inches deep. At 24 inches, rockwork can stand free of the glass on all sides, corals get years of growth room in every direction, and fish that pace a 75 settle down. The same footprint-to-length ratio is why the 120 is many hobbyists' "final" tank: it's the smallest size that doesn't feel like a compromise, while still fitting a standard 4-foot space.

The logistics nobody mentions

A running 120 system weighs ~1,400–1,600 lb loaded — on a wood floor, place it across joists, ideally near a load-bearing wall (and check, don't hope, if you're above a crawlspace). Evaporation runs 1–2+ gallons a day, so an auto top-off is day-one equipment, not an upgrade. And your RODI habit changes: a 75-GPD unit refilling a 120's reservoir plus water-change water spends hours running — buy 150 GPD once instead of twice.

Know your real volume first

Rock, a sand bed across 8 square feet, and the air gap take a real bite — most 120s see water volume around 100–105 gallons plus the sump. Every dose downstream keys off it: → get your true water volume (the 120 is a preset).

Sump + return pump

A 30–40 gallon sump fits most 120 stands and gives skimmer, refugium, and ATO reservoir room to coexist. Aim for roughly 7× display turnover delivered — about 840 GPH at the tank after head loss, which at this scale usually means a DC pump you can tune down rather than an AC pump at its limit:

Lighting — where the 24″ height bites

This is the line item the depth changes. Light falls off fast through two feet of water: fixtures that comfortably grow SPS at 16–18″ of depth may only deliver softie/LPS light at a 120's sand bed. You need fixtures with a published PAR-at-depth curve — not a marketing "suitable for SPS" badge — and at 48×24″ of surface, plan on two to three of them. Only 4 of 11 popular fixtures publish verifiable PAR curves — start there, and check their 24″ numbers specifically.

Flow

Target 20–40× turnover — 2,400–4,800 GPH total, more for SPS walls. The 24-inch width finally gives powerheads room to build broad, colliding gyres instead of jets; two larger units on opposing cycles beat four small ones fighting. Heat

Two heaters, ~200–250W each, both on an external controller. Redundancy stops being a nicety at this investment level: one stuck-off heater still keeps the tank warm; one stuck-on heater can only push half the wattage. Size the pair for your room →

What a 120 build actually costs

Ranges, not quotes. The recurring lines scale too: a 120 doing 10% weekly changes mixes ~52 gallons of saltwater a month — salt choice is now a real annual number, and dosing demand usually justifies a dosing pump within the first year.

Stocking a 120

The list finally opens up: most tangs (yellow, purple, tomini, even a hippo with rockwork planned for it), angel pairs, foxface, larger wrasses — alongside everything the smaller tanks allow. The 4-foot length is still the honest limit: adult naso tangs and true cruisers want six feet, and a 120 doesn't become a 180 because the fish is small today.

The order of operations

Verify the floor → tank, stand, sump placed and level → plumb and water-test the plumbing with fresh water (a 120's flood is a homeowners-insurance event, not a towel event) → RODI, saltwater, aquascape → equipment on → cycle (2–6 weeks) → cleanup crew → fish, then corals, slowly.
