What about kalkwasser?
None of the dosers above are purpose-built kalkwasser hardware — they're liquid dosers that can push a kalkwasser (calcium hydroxide) slurry through a line, and several are used that way. But kalkwasser needs two things a standard two-part comparison misses: a stirred reservoir (the slurry settles and needs continuous mixing or the dosed concentration drifts) and ideally pH-gated dosing (only dosing when tank pH is below a setpoint, to avoid the pH spikes kalkwasser is prone to). None of these dosers do pH-gating natively — DOS (via an Apex with a pH probe) and GHL's Doser (via ProfiLux's pH modules) are the two with a realistic path to it, since they already sit inside a broader sensor ecosystem. What about nitrate and phosphate?
Every doser on this page can also run carbon dosing (vodka, vinegar, or a bottled product like NOPX) — it's the same hardware, just a different bottle. That's a nutrient-export method, completely unrelated to the Alk/Ca/Mg chemistry the rest of this page covers. FAQ
Do I need an existing controller to use a dosing pump?
Depends which one. Red Sea's ReefDose 2/4, GHL's Doser 3 SA, Focustronic's Dosetronic, and Reef Factory's X4 are all genuinely standalone — app-controlled, no other hardware required. Neptune Systems' DOS is the exception: it's a $374.99 accessory that can't be programmed at all without a separate Apex A2 or A3 controller ($360+ more) to host it.
Can I use any of these to dose kalkwasser?
You can push kalkwasser through any of them, but a plain doser alone isn't the full setup — kalkwasser settles and needs continuous stirring, and ideally pH-gated dosing to avoid pH spikes at higher dose rates. None of these dose based on pH natively; DOS (paired with an Apex pH probe) and GHL's Doser (paired with ProfiLux's pH modules) are the two with a realistic path to it. Budget for a stirring kalk reactor as a second purchase either way.
Is the Reef Factory X4 still safe to buy?
It has the best published accuracy in this comparison (±0.01mL), but the manufacturer entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2025. It's still an active, orderable product with the company saying support continues, but long-term warranty and software support carry real uncertainty — weigh that against a financially stable brand before choosing it purely on the accuracy number.
