Failsafe count is our primary sort because overfill is the failure that kills tanks — a cheaper unit with one sensor is a different product than a similar-priced unit with three layers. Every brand here, including the winners, has documented failure reports; the architecture decides how much a failure costs you.

FAQ

Do I actually need an ATO?

Once your tank passes nano size, effectively yes. Open reef tanks evaporate roughly 1–3% of system volume per day (BRS's guideline: a 5-gallon reservoir refilled about weekly covers most tanks up to ~100 gallons) — and every gallon that leaves takes zero salt with it, so salinity climbs daily without top-off. Hand-topping works; doing it twice a day for years doesn't.

What actually fails on an ATO?

The sensor, in the "on" position. A fouled or stuck sensor keeps the pump running, which pumps your entire freshwater reservoir into the tank — crashing salinity and often flooding the floor. That's why sensor count and failsafe layers are the first column in our ranking, not the pump specs. Calcium buildup, algae, and snails sitting on the sensor are the classic triggers; clean the sensor when you clean the glass.

Optical or float sensor?

Optical has no moving parts to jam with salt creep, which is why nearly every current unit leads with one. The strongest designs pair optical with a different second technology (Tunze's float backup, Neptune's mechanical float valve) so one failure mode can't take out both layers at once.

How big should the reservoir be?

Big enough for a trip, small enough to limit the damage: if the sensor sticks, the entire reservoir goes into the tank. A 5-gallon jug on a 75-gallon system is a salinity annoyance; a 20-gallon barrel on a 50-gallon tank is a documented disaster (one owner's overnight dump dropped salinity to 1.018). Size it to about a week of evaporation.
