Reviews · Return Pumps
Best return pumps, ranked by the flow you actually get
Every "best return pump" list ranks by the box's max GPH — a number measured at zero head that no sump setup ever sees. We rank by delivered flow through realistic plumbing for each tank size, computed from each pump's published curve. Same math as our return pump calculator.

How these picks work: rankings are computed from manufacturer flow curves (dataset updated 2026-07-01) at each class's reference plumbing below — nobody pays for placement, and a pump we haven't bench-tested is never described as tested. Full methodology →
Nano / AIO (20–30 gal)
Short 2.5 ft rise through 3/4" line — the AIO back-chamber scenario. Target: 175 GPH delivered (7× turnover).
40 Breeder (40 gal)
Sump under the stand: 4 ft rise, 8 ft of 1" pipe, 4 elbows. Target: 280 GPH delivered (7× turnover).
75 Gallon
Taller stand: 4.5 ft rise, 10 ft of 1" pipe, 4 elbows. Target: 525 GPH delivered (7× turnover).
120 Gallon+
Big system: 5 ft rise, 12 ft of 1-1/4" pipe, 4 elbows. Target: 840 GPH delivered (7× turnover).
Every pump in the database
Delivered flow computed at the 75-gallon reference plumbing (taller stand: 4.5 ft rise, 10 ft of 1" pipe, 4 elbows.) so the numbers are comparable. For your plumbing, use the calculator.

† At the 75-gal reference plumbing above; "—" means the pump can't overcome that head (fine for nano/AIO use). * Manufacturer publishes only max flow + max head, so the curve between is modeled linearly — treat as a close approximation. Prices are street prices at the dataset date and drift with sales.
DC or AC?
Most of the picks above are DC — controllable, quieter, and efficient at partial speed. The case for AC is simplicity and lifespan at a lower price. We wrote the full decision up in DC vs AC return pumps.
Why "smallest sufficient" wins
An oversized pump costs more up front, burns more watts forever, and ends up throttled back anyway. Our right-size pick is the smallest pump that hits 7× display turnover through the class's plumbing — if your plumbing differs, a taller rise or narrower pipe can change the winner, which is exactly what the calculator is for.
