Which one fits your build?
First controller on a 40–90 gallon mixed reef, and you want it to just work: HYDROS. The X4/XP8 Pro Pack at $820.04 undercuts the equivalent Apex by ~$350, Collectives won't fight you, and the mesh design means an outlet-bar failure doesn't kill the brain. Accept the younger ecosystem and skip it only if automated testing is on your roadmap.
SPS-focused tank where automated Alk testing is the point: Apex. Trident is the reason — it's the most proven auto-tester, and the Apex ecosystem (DOS, third-party gear, a decade of Reef2Reef threads for every problem) is unmatched. Buy the full A3, not the Jr, and run Ethernet to it on day one.
You calibrate probes for fun and want the most capable machine: GHL. Nothing else ships four lab-grade probes with calibration fluids in the box, ION Director tests five parameters with zero recurring reagent cost, and logic gates will do things the other two can't. Budget real learning time — the $997.90 Mega-Set is the on-ramp.

Does Apex Fusion, myGHL, or the HYDROS app charge a monthly fee?
No — as of 2026-07-01, all three clouds are free. Apex Fusion, myGHL/GHL Connect, and the HYDROS app have no subscription tier. The recurring costs that ARE real: Trident reagents (~$45 every 2 months) if you add automated testing to an Apex.
Which reef controller is easiest to program?
HYDROS. Its Collectives system is a GUI automation builder closer to a smart-home app than a programming language. Apex sits in the middle with an if-this-then-that rule language, and GHL's logic-gate programming is the most powerful but the steepest — owners switching from Apex consistently describe a hard adjustment.
Which controller has automated water testing?
