Reviews · Protein Skimmers
Best protein skimmers, sized by honest capacity
A skimmer "rated up to 150 gallons" usually means 150 lightly-stocked gallons — on a normal mixed reef it's a 100-gallon skimmer, on a heavy fish load it's a 75. We rank by bioload-adjusted capacity: the manufacturer's own light/medium/heavy ratings where published, a conservative derate where they only give one optimistic number. Same math as our skimmer calculator.

How these picks work: computed from manufacturer ratings (dataset updated 2026-07-01) at a medium mixed-reef bioload — nobody pays for placement, and nothing here is described as hand-tested when it wasn't. Full methodology →
Nano / AIO (15–30 gal)
Small in-sump or AIO-chamber skimmers for nano mixed reefs.
40 Breeder (40 gal)
The classic first "real" reef — a sump skimmer with honest 40-gallon capacity at medium load.
75 Gallon
Mixed-reef mainstay. This is where oversold "rated 150 gallons" nano bodies get exposed.
120 Gallon+
Heavier fish load territory — honest medium-bioload capacity of 120+ gallons.

* Manufacturer publishes a single "rated up to" number with no bioload breakdown, so we apply a conservative 0.7× derate for medium bioload — honest approximation, flagged as such. Prices are street prices at the dataset date.
Why right-sizing beats oversizing
The old "buy a skimmer rated 2× your tank" advice exists because headline ratings are optimistic — our medium/heavy math bakes that correction in. Going far beyond it backfires: a big skimmer on a light-bioload tank sits in the water column too clean to foam properly, skims wet, and needs constant tuning. Match the honest capacity to your tank and load, and the skimmer runs stable.
Check the sump before you buy
The spec that kills more skimmer purchases than any other: footprint and water depth. Most in-sump skimmers want 7–9 inches of water; the table above lists footprints where published. Measure your skimmer chamber first.
